Join the Burlington Choral Society on Saturday, November 22 as they sing for a more peaceful and compassionate world. “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” was composed by Karl Jenkins in 1999 in dedication to the victims of the Kosovo crisis, and its message resonates in our tumultuous world today. The piece charts the growing menace of a descent into war, includes moments of somber reflection, reveals the horror that war brings, and ends with the hope for peace, when “sorrow, pain, and death can be overcome.”
The chorus will also perform three pieces around the theme of Vermont: the well-known shape note hymn “Jerusalem,” composed in 1796 by Jeremiah Ingalls in Newbury; “Ce n’est pas trop” (“It is not much”), a love song by Pierre Vermont, who lived in Paris in the early 16th century; and “Our Wish This Year is Peace,” composed in 1992 by Erik Nielsen, who lives in Brookfield.
The chorus will be accompanied by Jenkins’ arrangement for solo cello, flute, trumpets, percussion, and keyboard.
Join us in song on Saturday, November 22 at 7pm at the Elley-Long Music Center at St. Michael’s College.
