We are celebrating 50 Years of the Burlington Choral Society (BCS), the legacy of Richard Riley, J.S. Bach, and a world premiere by Burlington-based composer Michael Schachter!
We are thrilled to share the news of our spring concert! "All Is Breath: the Music of Bach and Schachter" will take place on Saturday, April 18 at the Elley-Long Music Center at 7:30 PM.
The concert will start with two Bach arrangements by Mr. Riley for chorus and orchestra of music originally written for instruments alone. The program will continue with the excerpt "Be at peace again, my soul" from Bach's cantata BWV 21, and the entirety of Bach’s most popular cantata, "Wachet Auf."
Burlington-based composer Michael Schachter has composed the eponymous “Qohelet,” a new work for chorus, vocal soloists, and orchestra that references the wise figure in Ecclesiastes who questioned the value of worldly pursuits and acknowledged the futility of life’s endeavors.
“Qohelet urges us to accept the finitude of kings and paupers alike,” said Schachter. “The piece presents a strikingly evergreen text whose sensibility seems somehow even better suited to our secular age than the thousands of years ago when it was written."
The BCS will also be presenting the first Burlington performance of Schachter's "Oseh Shalom Bimromav" (He who makes peace in High Places).
The performance will feature soprano Mary Bonhag (who performed in Riley's first concert with the BCS in 2012), bass-baritone Sumner Thompson, and an orchestra of 15.
Join us in song on Saturday, April 18th at 7:30 pm at the Elley-Long Music Center at St. Michael’s College.
